Non-Profit Spotlight: Clean Lakes Alliance

The Clean Lakes Alliance is a local organization, founded in 2010, that is dedicated to the preservation of our area lakes. They adhere to the motto “healthy lakes, healthy communities”. Madison is known for its lakes, which shape our city’s infrastructure and provide countless recreation activities for area residents. Our lakes are central to our community and taking care of them is a collective responsibility we should all share.

According to the Clean Lakes Alliance their mission is “to continue building a community of people, businesses, organizations, and government agencies dedicated to improving and protecting water quality in the Yahara River Watershed and its lakes”. They accomplish their mission through a number of programs and events. They also work closely with government agencies and those who live and/or recreate on our lakes to advocate for the health and safety of our waterways.

As a true advocate for our lakes, they have a number of accomplishments to their credit. They have successfully initiated programs for both residential and agriculture communities to reduce run off, phosphorus, and other lake contamination. They have also worked to reduce and prevent the damage caused by invasive species, and have extensively fundraised for clean lakes initiatives and programs. Check out a full list of their accomplishments here.

From educational events to festivals and sporting events, Clean lakes Alliance has lots of opportunities for you to learn and get involved. Check out their Clean Lakes 101 series to learn more about the science behind issues facing our lakes. These talks are held monthly and are free to everyone. If you’re looking for ways to enjoy the outdoors while supporting our lakes, check out Loop The Lake (an annual bike ride) or the Clean Lakes Volunteer Days to get involved. If winter fun is your thing, you won’t want to miss the Frozen Assets Festival.

There are so many ways to get involved and ensure that our lakes stay clean and healthy for future generations to enjoy. To learn more about Clean Lakes Alliance and their programs, accomplishments, and opportunities, visit them at
